HBCUs, students, alumni and supporters to rally for funding and support in Maryland

Students, supporters and alumni of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), namely: Bowie State University; Coppin State University; Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will today afternoon converge outside the Maryland State House to demonstrate and lobby state legislators for more funding and support.

Today’s demonstration is organized by a coalition of groups which includes the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. HBCUs in Maryland and by extension in the United States continue to be underfunded – a legacy of the segregation era.

Executive director if the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Ms. LáVita M. Simpson insists that a major is issue is the disproportionate number of part-time or adjunct professors at Maryland’s HBCUs because of a lack of funding. Unlike full-time professors, for the most part adjunct professors are unable to quality for research funding, which she said is an important source of income to colleges and universities.
