Haiti working towards the launch of an Investment Fund

Monday, September 29, 2014

Haiti’s Finance and Economy minister, Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie, has announced the creation of a new investment fund, that will replace the Haiti Reconstruction Fund (HRF), set up after the devastating earthquake that hit the country in 2010.

According to Jean-Marie, the new fund, will help finance a series of projects likely to have a lasting impact on Haiti’s development process.

“Haiti Reconstruction Fund has served the purposed for which it was created. The fund must now cease to exist, to make way for the new instrument we want to establish – the Haiti Investment Fund,” said Jean-Marie.

The Finance minister said the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has agreed to finance the feasibility study of the investment fund project.

The Haiti Investment Fund will be launched on the symbolic day of January 12, 2015, which will mark the 5th anniversary of a terrible earthquake that devastated the country and left up to 300,000 people killed and hundreds of thousands more homeless.

The country’s Prime minister Laurent Lamothe, proposed to use funds, still remaining in the disappearing Haiti Reconstruction Fund, to finance a cableway project destined to serve populations in poor communities. Lamothe referred to similar projects in popular areas in Colombia and Brazil and announced that the project will create jobs within those poor communities.
