GTBank Wins African Bank of the Year Award

For the second year in a row, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTB) has been named “African Bank of the Year” by the African Banker Magazine.  The African Banker Awards is one of the biggest annual events that recognises and celebrates the achievements of individuals and financial institutions in Africa’s banking sector.

Nigeria’s GTBank was recognised for its leadership, especially for its consistent strong financial performance and quality of financial services which has contributed significantly to the financial growth of its home country and the Africa as a whole.  Collecting the “2014 African Bank of the Year” award on behalf of the company in Kigali-Rwanda, GTBank Kenya Managing Director, Mr Kunle Sonola said the award is a “challenge and a call to do more to project the global relevance of the African banking industry.”

Women bankers also excel at the award ceremony as they got three of the most coveted individual awards.  Bank of Botswana Governor Linah Mohohlo was named Central Bank Governor of the Year while Chairperson of the Kenya Women Finance Trust, Elizabeth Mary Oleko got the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Vivienne Yeda, Director General of the East African Development Bank was also awarded the much-desired African Banker of the Year.  Meanwhile, Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) CEO, Andrew Alli, was recognised as the African Banker Icon of the year for helping to change the perception of Africa by putting infrastructure investment in Africa on the map, having successfully led AFC through another landmark year of high returns, improved shareholder value and establishing infrastructure investment.
