Grenada’s Opposition Leader Keith Mitchell Announces Retirement as NNP Leader
Keith Mitchell, leader of Grenada’s New National Party (NNP), has announced he will not seek re-election as party leader, marking the end of an era in Grenadian politics.
First elected to Parliament in 1984 for the St. George North West constituency, Mitchell has held the seat in every election since. He became NNP leader in 1989, succeeding Prime Minister Herbert Blaize.
Over his career, Mitchell served multiple terms as Prime Minister, including a historic 1999 victory where the NNP won all 15 parliamentary seats, a feat repeated in 2013 and 2018.
Under his leadership, the NNP achieved several milestones but also faced defeats, including a loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2008 and again in 2022, when the NNP secured six seats to the NDC’s nine. Mitchell has also held key portfolios, including Minister of Finance.
The NNP expressed gratitude for Mitchell’s transformative leadership and decades of service, vowing to honor his legacy by remaining united and optimistic about the nation’s future.
