ECOWAS to Slash Air Transport Taxes to Boost Regional Connectivity
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will eliminate air transport taxes effective 1 January 2026, aiming to lower airfares and stimulate regional travel, trade, and integration.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the bloc announced a 25 percent reduction in passenger and security-related aviation charges beginning in 2026. The move follows a directive from ECOWAS heads of state at their December 2024 summit in Abuja.
Citing “long-standing concerns about the high cost of flying in West Africa,” ECOWAS said excessive fees have hindered tourism, commerce, and the free movement of people and goods—core pillars of its regional integration agenda.
The organization expects the reforms to drive down ticket prices, boost passenger volumes, strengthen local carriers, and accelerate economic cohesion across its 15 member states. A dedicated oversight mechanism will track implementation across the region.
