The Dangote Group has revealed that its US$9 billion oil refinery will be on stream by December 2017. The Dangote refinery, located in Lekki, Lagos State, targets delivering upwards of 500,000 barrels of refined crude oil per day.

The refinery will produce gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel/ household kerosene, slurry as raw material for carbon black, as well as 750,000 metric tonnes per annum of polypropylene.

The Dangote refinery will be situated on 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) of land and is also to include a 750,000 metric tonnes of polypropylene for the petrochemicals plant and another fertilizer plant, which would produce 2.8 million metric tonnes per annum of urea and ammonia.

The Dangote oil refinery project is the first of its kind, having the longest single train refinery in the world.

The founder and chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, becomes the first person of African origin and descent to launch, own and control an oil refinery.

According to Dangote, the launch of the refinery will address the “paradox” of Nigeria being one of the world’s largest producer and exporter of crude oil, and yet imports most of its refined products.
