As Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness assumes the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), he has emphasized that the future of Caribbean integration hinges on unity and collective action.

In his CARICOM Day address, Holness praised the regional bloc for more than five decades of progress in economic cooperation, disaster resilience, and shared identity among its 15 member states and six associate members. He stressed that CARICOM remains a vital platform for small island nations to confront common challenges – from climate change to economic vulnerability – with a unified voice.

Holness highlighted the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as a cornerstone of regional development, enabling free movement of goods, labor, and services. While acknowledging its achievements, he called for renewed commitment to fully realize the CSME’s potential in boosting intra-regional trade and inclusive growth.

He also lauded key institutions such as CARPHA, CXC, CDEMA, and the University of the West Indies for their role in shaping public policy and improving quality of life across the region.

Looking ahead, Holness outlined priorities including climate financing, food and energy security, and combating transnational crime. He reaffirmed CARICOM’s support for Haiti’s stability and urged member states to work together in addressing emerging threats and global uncertainties.

In closing, Holness called on Caribbean citizens at home and abroad to celebrate regional progress and recommit to building a stronger, more united Caribbean Community.

“Together, let us continue to build a Caribbean Community that shines as a beacon of unity, shared purpose, and hope,” he said.
