Bounce TV to launch on ABC affiliate WXYZ this week

Monday, September 24, 2012

Wednesday will mark a notable day in Metro Detroit television history as WXYZ (Channel 7, an ABC affiliate) will launch BOUNCE TV, considered in a press release as “the nation’s first broadcast TV network designed for African-American audiences.”

The new network can be seen on channel 7.3; WXYZ is the first Scripps-owned station in the country to offer The Bounce TV network.

This new network is a multicast channel; the addition won’t affect the original WXYZ station’s ABC affiliation or programming.

BOUNCE TV, according to a press release, “targets African-Americans between the ages of 25 and 54, with a programming mix of theatrical motions pictures, live sporting events, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series and original series”.

The press release states this network is currently seen in 60 percent of television households in 17 of the top 20 television markets, and in more than 80 percent of African American homes.

“We look forward to building this network for our local viewers,” WXYZ general manager Ed Fernandez said in a press release, “and believe this effort, as has always been the case at WXYZ, will serve our community well.”

BOUNCE TV’s upcoming movie line-up listed in a press release includes Jamie Foxx’s Academy Award-winning performance as Ray Charles in “Ray,” Denzel Washington’s Academy Award-nominated role in “The Hurricane,” Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” and “Jungle Fever,” “The Nutty Professor I and II,” starring Eddie Murphy, Will Smith as “Ali,” 1985 Best picture nominee “A Soldier’s Story,” Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in “Stir Crazy,” and Sidney Poitier’s classic “A Raisin in the Sun.”
