Ghana is fast-tracking plans to boost domestic gas processing and strengthen the financial stability of its energy sector, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor announced at the West African Energy Cooperation Summit on December 2, 2025.

Jinapor said the government aims to deploy a new local gas processing plant within 12 months, enabling the country to process a greater share of its own gas. “Our vision is that within a year, we should have a lab-scale gas processing facility operational so we can increase domestic gas consumption,” he said.

He added that work at the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTB) field is advancing, with the site expected to supply about 50 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas.

Ghana is also intensifying negotiations with Nigeria and private sector partners to secure additional imports.

The minister highlighted progress on the Atuabo Gas Plant upgrade, which will raise capacity to 120 mmscf per day. Improved financial discipline, he noted, is already attracting investor interest.

“When there is efficiency and improvement, capital flows automatically,” Jinapor said, pointing to GH¢6 billion (US$527 million) in payments made through the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) in 2024.

He added that Ghana has now regularized payments for gas supply and the West African Gas Pipeline, strengthening its ability to access cheaper and more reliable financing.
