Black-owned OneUnited Bank rolls out Harriet Tubman Card

OneUnited Bank, the largest Black owned bank in the United States and the first Black internet bank, has launched the Harriet Tubman Card to commemorate the Black History Month.

The limited-edition offering is named after Harriet Tubman, an American political activist who escaped slavery and rescued other enslaved people through 19 missions. Besides, she was an advocate of women’s voting rights.

She also worked for the Union Army as an armed scout.

OneUnited Bank president and COO Teri Williams said: “We have the power to place Harriet Tubman on a global payment device in celebration of Black History Month. This symbol of Black empowerment in 2020 will pave the way for the Harriet Tubman design on the US$20 bill.”

The new offering is the first limited edition card provided by the bank and features an image from Addonis Parker’s “The Conqueror” painting.

Customers can avail the new card only this year.

An Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insured entity, OneUnited Bank has branches in Los Angeles, Boston as well as Miami.

The bank was formed by consolidating multiple US Black-owned banks, namely Founders National Bank of Commerce in Los Angeles, Family Savings Bank in Los Angeles, Peoples National Bank of Commerce in Miami and Boston Bank of Commerce.

According to the OneUnited Bank website, the bank has provided loans of more than US$100 million in the last couple of years, mainly in South Central, Compton, Liberty City and Roxbury communities.
