Belize Elects First Woman to Lead Major Political Party
Tracy Taegar-Panton has made history as the first woman to lead Belize’s main opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), after being sworn in amid efforts to mend months of internal turmoil.
Taegar-Panton said the weight of the role is clear, calling her appointment a critical moment for “resetting” the party and rebuilding public trust. “We have an opportunity to restore confidence in the UDP and refocus on delivering for the Belizean people,” she said.
Her rise follows a protracted legal dispute with outgoing leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow, who previously prevailed in court battles over party leadership and prompted Taegar-Panton to form an internal faction, the Alliance for Democracy. Barrow, who failed to retain his seat in the March general election, pledged a “peaceful transfer of power,” wishing her the wisdom and resolve to guide the UDP back to competitiveness.
Taegar-Panton, who secured her parliamentary seat in March, now becomes the first woman to head a major political party in Belize’s history, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
