Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has signaled she may call an early general election in 2026 – more than a year before the constitutional deadline of 2027 – reigniting speculation about her political timing.

At a reception at her official residence, Mottley told supporters of her ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to “rest over Christmas” but to be “ready” for action next year. “We are all turning up for work in 2026,” she declared, adding, “If something can be done, it is this Barbados Labour Party that will do it – always, always, always.”

Her comments, met with loud applause, follow her established pattern: Mottley has twice before dissolved Parliament early, leading the BLP to historic 30–0 victories in 2018 and 2022.

Mottley also touted Barbados’ economic gains, citing 17 consecutive quarters of growth, record-low unemployment, and the highest foreign reserves in the nation’s history. “We no longer go to sleep worrying about foreign reserves,” she said.

Political analyst Peter Wickham recently told Barbados TODAY that a 2026 election is “highly likely.” The BLP has already begun candidate preparations, recently nominating new contenders for the St. Thomas and St. Joseph constituencies after longtime MPs announced their retirements.

An early vote would test whether Mottley’s economic track record can again deliver a sweeping mandate – this time amid global uncertainty and domestic expectations for continued reform.
