Bahamas Parties Launch Campaigns Ahead of May 12 General Election

The two main political parties in The Bahamas have formally launched their campaigns for the May 12 general election, setting up a closely contested race between the ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and the opposition Free National Movement (FNM).

Prime Minister Philip Davis framed the vote as a choice on leadership and continuity, highlighting his administration’s record and warning against frequent changes in government. No party has won consecutive terms since Hubert Ingraham secured re-election in 1997.

Davis argued that instability has hindered long-term development and said the opposition lacks a credible policy platform.

Opposition leader Michael Pintard called for a “reset,” urging voters to back the FNM. He criticized the government’s economic management and governance record, while positioning his party as better suited to attract investment and restore confidence.

Immigration has emerged as a central campaign issue. Davis defended his government’s enforcement record and pledged further reforms, including a biometric system and stricter penalties for illegal employment.

Pintard countered that the administration could have enacted reforms before calling early elections, nearly five months ahead of schedule.

Davis also pointed to divisions within the FNM, including former prime minister Hubert Minnis running as an independent. Pintard, meanwhile, criticized the timing of the election and emphasized the FNM’s long-term policy agenda.

With both parties now mobilized, the campaign is expected to intensify as voters decide whether to grant the PLP a second term or return the FNM to power.
