Algeria’s parliament has passed a law formally defining France’s 132-year colonial occupation as a crime against humanity, escalating a longstanding historical dispute. The legislation mandates an official state narrative citing systemic violence, repression, and exploitation.

The move aims to “safeguard national memory” and recognize specific atrocities, including mass killings and cultural destruction. It also establishes a legal framework for potential future claims regarding reparations and formal apologies from France.

Relations between Algiers and Paris have long been strained by contested history. France, which ruled Algeria from 1830 until a brutal war ended in 1962, has historically favored dialogue over legal condemnations of its colonial past.

Analysts view the law as a response to domestic pressure for a harder stance on colonial legacy, even as practical cooperation on energy, security, and migration continues. The codification is expected to further complicate diplomatic ties, challenging France’s preferred approach to historical reconciliation.
