The Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) extended its congratulations to Suriname’s Foreign Minister, Albert Ramdin, on his historic election as the new Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Ramdin was elected for the 2025-2030 term during the 56th Special Session of the OAS General Assembly on Monday. The 67-year-old Ramdin received the position by acclamation after the withdrawal of Rubén Ramírez, Paraguay’s Foreign Minister. He succeeds Luis Almagro, who has held the post since 2015 and was re-elected in 2020.

Ramdin will serve until 2030.

COFCOR emphasized that Ramdin’s election reflects the trust and confidence of OAS Member States in his capabilities. The Council expressed its belief that, with his distinguished career in foreign policy and diplomacy, including his prior role as OAS Assistant Secretary-General, Ramdin is well-equipped to lead the organization in addressing key challenges such as peace, security, socio-economic development, democracy, and good governance across the Americas.

The Caribbean Community remains confident that Minister Ramdin will excel in his new role, upholding the OAS Charter and demonstrating the expertise necessary to navigate regional challenges. His leadership is expected to further contribute to the shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous hemisphere.
