Trinidad & Tobago to Swear In New Prime Minister Today
Trinidad & Tobago is set to welcome its ninth Prime Minister today, as Kamla Persad-Bissessar returns to the nation’s highest office.
Just two days after leading the United National Congress (UNC) to a decisive victory in the 2025 General Election, Persad-Bissessar, 73, is poised to reclaim the role she previously held from 2010 to 2015. Her campaign focused on tackling the country’s rising crime rates and economic instability, with pledges to increase public sector wages, safeguard pensions for seniors, and revive Petrotrin—the state-owned oil company shuttered in 2018.
The UNC officially announced her return on Wednesday, following its sweeping win on Monday. The timing of the inauguration is notable, taking place just one day after the party celebrated its 36th anniversary.
The UNC secured 26 out of 41 parliamentary seats, while the People’s National Movement (PNM), which had governed for the past decade, was reduced to 13 seats, marking a dramatic political shift.
In addition to the Prime Minister, an Attorney General is expected to be sworn in today. UNC officials have confirmed the AG will be male, though his identity has not yet been disclosed.
The rest of the Cabinet is expected to be sworn in at a later date, with early indications suggesting a public venue may be chosen for the ceremony instead of the traditional setting at the President’s House.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar made history in 2010 when she became Trinidad & Tobago’s first female Prime Minister. Her return marks a significant moment in the nation’s political landscape.
