Trinidad & Tobago

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake has shaken Trinidad & Tobago early this morning, but there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake occurred around 3:49 a.m. EDT to the northwest of Trinidad, at a depth of 136 km (85 miles), and was felt widely across the the twin-island nation.

Residents flooded the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center’s Facebook page with posts indicating they felt the earthquake, with some indicating it was so strong that it woke them from sleep.

While the seismic center indicated a magnitude of 4.8 in its report of the earthquake, it indicated the results were preliminary and may vary when additional data is processed. Other seismic monitoring agencies put the strength of the earthquake at between 5.0 and 5.1.

Between Tuesday afternoon and yesterday, five earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.8 and 4.1 were recorded northeast of Barbados by the seismic center, but went widely unnoticed by residents. – (CMC)
