Trinidad & Tobago rocked by Two Earthquakes
Trinidad & Tobago experienced two earthquakes within a 12-hour period over the weekend, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies, the stronger of the two tremors struck on Sunday night at 8:41 p.m., registering a magnitude of 5.5.
The SRC reported that the quake was centered at Latitude 10.96°N, Longitude 62.23°W, at a depth of 31 kilometers (19 miles). It was felt approximately 86 kilometers northwest of the capital, Port of Spain; 111 kilometers (68 miles) west-northwest of Arima; and 115 kilometers (70 miles) east-northeast of Carúpano, Venezuela.
A second earthquake, measuring 3.8 in magnitude, occurred later that evening at 10:08 p.m., the SRC said. This tremor was located at Latitude 10.97°N, Longitude 62.20°W, at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).
It was felt approximately 84 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of Port of Spain, 108 kilometers (66 miles) northwest of Arima, and 114 kilometers (69 miles) northwest of San Fernando, which lies to the west of the capital. -(CMC)
