South Africa: Police Chief suspended, 2 ministers fired

Monday, October 24, 2011

South Africa’s president says he has suspended the national police chief and fired two Cabinet ministers implicated in graft.

In an announcement Monday aired live on national television, President Jacob Zuma (pictured), revealed that Cooperative Governance Minister Sicelo Shiceka and Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu Nkabinde will leave cabinet.

Shiceka, who an independent investigator says, used taxpayer money to visit a girlfriend imprisoned in Switzerland.

The announcement followed weeks of calls for Zuma to act decisively against corruption.
