Six Political Parties Cleared to Contest Guyana’s Upcoming Elections
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has officially approved six political parties to contest the upcoming General and Regional Elections, scheduled for later this year.
The decision followed a special commission meeting on Friday, July 18, 2025, where GECOM reviewed and validated candidate lists submitted in compliance with statutory deadlines after Nomination Day on July 14.
The approved parties are:
- A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)
- Alliance for Change (AFC)
- Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP)
- Forward Guyana Movement (FGM)
- People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C)
- We Invest in Nationhood (WIN)
All six parties will participate in the General Elections. However, only four – APNU, AFC, PPP/C, and WIN – have submitted complete candidate lists for all ten regional districts. ALP and FGM will contest in selected districts only.
Originally, seven parties submitted lists on Nomination Day. GECOM reported procedural defects in some submissions, which were communicated to the respective parties by the Chief Election Officer (CEO) by July 15.
Parties had until July 17 to correct and resubmit their documents, and all complied within the deadline.
Party representatives now have until July 21 to inform the CEO in writing if they intend to join candidate lists – a provision under Guyana’s electoral law. The final approved lists are set to be gazetted and published on July 23.
This development marks a pivotal step in the electoral process, as Guyana heads into a high-stakes election season marked by evolving political alliances and rising competition from newer parties.
