REDjet set to expand to Suriname

REDjet, the Barbados-based low cost airline, is in the process of obtaining a license to include Suriname in its schedule.

Winston Lackin, the Suriname Foreign Affairs Minister, indicated that the national airline – Surinam Airways (SLM) had been requested to study possibilities for flights to Barbados. The SLM in turn indicated that it would not seek to fly to Barbados.

The government of Barbados in turn submitted an official request to Suriname for landing rights for REDjet.

Suriname and Barbados have had a mutual aviation agreement for years, but so far no company had requested permission for regular scheduled flights.

REDjet will probably receive its license in February.

The government of Suriname is not concerned that opening the skies and taking away restraints on the regional destinations will invite fierce competition for the SLM. Mr. Lackin also indicated that the SLM has the opportunity to participate in regional operations.
