Maria Beckett grew an information technology business from her basement up. Fifteen years later she sold it for more than US$40 million.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in New Jersey, Beckett majored in Information Systems Science and graduated from Stockton College, Pomona, NJ. She went on to jobs as a programmer and as database administrator, learning the ropes of business in high-tech companies located within the Baltimore-Washington corridor. By 1996, after five years with a leading spice, herbs and flavoring manufacturer, she decided it was time to start her own IT support business.

Beckett founded Maricom Systems, Inc., an IT firm specializing in data management, software engineering, and business intelligence solutions. By 2011, when Beckett sold Maricom for $40 million to CSC, her firm had worked successfully with government, healthcare, and commercial sectors, providing management, maintenance, and support of large data environments.
