Oprah Winfrey Surprises Morehouse Scholars Ahead of Graduation
Soon-to-be graduates at Morehouse College received an unexpected visit Friday night when Oprah Winfrey appeared at a celebration for participants in her long-running scholarship program.
The students, part of the Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program, had gathered to mark their academic progress ahead of May commencement. Established in 1989, the program has supported generations of Black men pursuing higher education in Atlanta.
Winfrey’s appearance – described by students as surprising – included a small-group discussion in which she shared career and financial advice. She characterized the scholarship as “the best investment” she has made, framing it as part of a “safe” investment strategy rooted in long-term impact.
The program provides not only financial support but also leadership training, community service opportunities, and international exposure, including summer travel to South Africa. Participants must meet academic benchmarks and demonstrate a sustained commitment to leadership and service.
The visit underscores Winfrey’s continued engagement with the program as its latest cohort prepares to graduate and enter the next stage of their careers.
