JIS | The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has officially approved the renaming of Ashoka Road in the Waterhouse district of Kingston to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive.

The decision was made during a council meeting on Tuesday, held at the Marcus Garvey Council Chamber in downtown Kingston. The resolution was proposed by Councillor Byron Clarke, who represents the Waterhouse Division.

This renaming honors Fraser-Pryce’s extraordinary achievements in track and field, as well as her unwavering dedication and contributions to the Waterhouse community and Jamaica as a whole.

Born and raised on Ashoka Road, Fraser-Pryce is a ten-time world champion and an eight-time Olympic medalist. She is the only sprinter, male or female, to have won five world titles in the 100 meters, accomplishing this feat in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2019, and 2022.

Councillor Clarke commended Fraser-Pryce as an exceptional role model and a source of hope and inspiration. Through her Pocket Rocket Foundation, she has positively impacted the lives of many young athletes by providing scholarships and financial support.

“Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is more than deserving of this honor,” said Clarke. “This recognition will serve as an inspiration for future generations.”

“As the local representative, I take pride in honoring Mrs. Fraser-Pryce for her determination, commitment, resilience, and dedication to serving her country and community. She embodies a passionate purpose, driven by hard work and an indomitable spirit,” Clarke added.

He also emphasized that Fraser-Pryce’s contributions extend far beyond her athletic achievements. “Her true value is not limited to her prowess on the track; it’s her impact on others and her character that make her truly remarkable.”

Kingston Mayor, Councillor Andrew Swaby, shared that there are plans to celebrate Fraser-Pryce’s legacy and contributions. He stated that preliminary discussions have already taken place with the Civic Committee, the Principal of her former school, Wolmer’s Girls’ High School, members of the Pocket Rocket Foundation, and other key stakeholders.
