Former US Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday that she will not run for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation about her possible candidacy for the state’s top office.

“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor. I love this state, its people, and its promise.

It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” Harris said in a statement.

The decision may clear the path for Harris to pursue a 2028 presidential campaign, an option she has not ruled out. She promised to share more details about her future plans “in the months ahead.”

Harris expressed respect for public servants but criticized the current political climate, urging innovation and fresh approaches. “We must be willing to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking – committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook,” she said.

Following her 2024 presidential election defeat, Harris reflected on how best to serve the Democratic Party. She emphasized her lifelong commitment to public service, highlighting her roles as prosecutor, California Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and Vice President.

In recent months, Harris has actively engaged with Democratic causes, including virtual appearances at youth voter summits and abortion rights events. Her joint fundraising committee with the Democratic National Committee has also supported former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s Senate campaign.

Although not running for governor, Harris affirmed her dedication to fighting for “freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all” and pledged to continue helping elect Democrats nationwide.

“I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,” she concluded.
