Jasmine Crockett Launches Bid for Texas Senate Seat
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett launched a campaign for Senate, entering the Democratic primary just before Texas’ filing deadline. The two-term congresswoman from Dallas will seek to challenge Republican incumbent Senator John Cornyn.
Crockett, a prominent progressive and vocal critic of US President Donald Trump, framed her “Texas Tough” bid as an effort to build a multi-racial coalition and energize disenchanted voters. “What we need is a bigger voice,” she told supporters, pledging to focus on economic costs and accountability.
Her decision follows a Republican-led redistricting that altered her House district. Democrats, though long absent from statewide victory in Texas, view Cornyn’s seat as a potential opportunity.
Crockett, a former civil rights attorney and public defender, brings significant name recognition from her national profile. The Democratic primary is set for March; if no candidate secures a majority, a runoff will follow in May.
Democrats nationally need a net gain of four seats to reclaim Senate control.
