Howard University Tops Forbes’ HBCU Rankings for Second Consecutive Year
Howard University has been named the nation’s top historically Black college or university (HBCU) for the second year in a row, securing the No. 1 spot on Forbes’ 2026 America’s Top Colleges list. The recognition highlights Howard’s strong return on investment, low student debt, and consistent career success for graduates from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
Forbes evaluates 500 U.S. colleges on metrics including graduation rates, post-graduation earnings, retention, and support for low-income students, particularly Pell Grant recipients. Among HBCUs, Howard stands out for producing competitive salaries while maintaining some of the lowest student loan debt in Washington, D.C.
“Howard University proves that access, affordability, and academic rigor can coexist at the highest level,” Forbes editors said. “The university delivers transformative outcomes without imposing undue financial burdens on students.”
Federal data show Howard graduates carry significantly lower debt than peers at Georgetown University, George Washington University, and American University, while achieving leadership roles across industries. LinkedIn similarly ranked Howard the top HBCU in 2024, noting its success in preparing students for career advancement, internships, and entrepreneurial ventures.
Howard is also the only HBCU classified as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Classification, signaling “very high research activity” and leadership in science, medicine, engineering, and the humanities.
Founded in 1867, Howard serves more than 13,000 students across 14 schools and offers over 120 programs in liberal arts, STEM, health sciences, law, business, fine arts, and communications.
“Being recognized by Forbes and LinkedIn affirms our mission of truth and service,” said Howard University President Ben Vinson III. “Our faculty and staff ensure that every Bison thrives academically, professionally, and personally.”
Howard’s consecutive top rankings underscore its leadership in affordable, high-quality education and its enduring impact on student success nationwide.
