Hotel Industry Thriving in Sub-Saharan Africa
Ward also said, “What we’re analyzing here is deals signed by the international and regional hotel chains with developers and investors. At one extreme, they’re just pieces of paper [but] we then go on to look at what’s actually under construction, what is happening on ground.”
He then concluded, “It’s quite marked that in North Africa, about 75 per cent of hotels in the pipeline are under construction. In sub-Saharan Africa, it’s about 50 per cent. In Nigeria, it’s about 40 per cent. There are a lot of new deals which we hope by next year will be in that under construction column. Nigeria is where the action is and I think it will continue to be.”
