Haiti’s president Michel Martelly has returned to Miami for medical treatment on doctor’s orders because of complications related to a recent surgery, his office has said.

Mr Martelly left two weeks ago to have an operation on his right shoulder but his office did not give details about the problem.

He spent several days in Florida recovering and returned last Thursday.

Mr. Martelly had surgery on his left shoulder in November because of pain that he said had bothered him from his previous career.

The announcement comes a few days after officials in Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic announced that a retired Dominican military officer and a Haitian accomplice were trying to force Mr Martelly from office.

Officials from both countries have called the allegations absurd.
