With PLP victory, David Burt, 38 set to become Bermuda’s youngest premier

The Progressive Labor Party (PLP) last night soared to a landslide victory in yesterday’s general election, with David Burt set to become Bermuda’s youngest premier.

David Burt and his PLP won 24 seats – capturing approximately 60 percent of the vote, while the defeated One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) party won 12 seats.

The 38-year-old Burt will likely be sworn into office today.
Addressing his joyous supporters, Burt said: “the most important people to thank today is all of you – this [victory] belongs to all of you, because you saw through the negative attacks, all of you saw through what they tried to say about the PLP and you believed in your hearts that all of us, together with all of you, could change the course of our country.”

Out-going Premier concedes

The defeated former premier, Michael Dunkley conceded defeat, adding that his OBA party had suffered a crushing defeat.
“Congratulations to Mr Burt and the PLP,” he said. “My colleagues and I wish them all the best as they try and move Bermuda forward.”
