Barbados: Voters to elect a new government on February 21

Voters in Barbados go to the polls on February 21 to elect a new government, the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) said Tuesday.

Nomination Day is set for February 6.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave has issued the writ for a general election and dissolved Parliament, which earlier on Tuesday adjourned its last session until February 5.

The announcement ends months of speculation as to when the ruling Democratic Labor Party (DLP) will seek a second term in office.

The main opposition Barbados Labor Party (BLP) had boycotted Tuesday’s sitting of the House of Assembly, in protest against the delay in calling the election past the fifth anniversary of the DLP administration on January 15.

The latest poll numbers do not augur well for the incumbent Prime Minister Stuart – as 53 percent of voters do not approve of the way the Prime Minister is doing his job.
