During the opening ceremony of the University of The Bahamas Law Society’s Legal Week 2025 on January 27, Prime Minister Philip Davis emphasized the importance of investing in technological innovation for the region’s future. He highlighted that digitalization, alongside climate change and social justice, forms the core of global transitions.

He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for digital technologies in the legal system, prompting swift adoption of digital hearings, remote access, and cloud-based storage. Davis emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum, citing the introduction of electronic filing for the Supreme Court as a recent advancement.

Prime Minister Davis stressed the need to expand court infrastructure and update legislation to ensure efficient justice administration, including recent amendments to key acts. While acknowledging the progress made with the Trial by Judge Alone legislation in 2024, he reaffirmed the commitment to equipping the judiciary to address 21st-century challenges.

He also urged young legal professionals to engage in climate change discussions, recognizing the potential for innovation in sustainability and environmental law. Davis encouraged the use of legal expertise to navigate future challenges, particularly in areas like financial services, where emerging fields such as carbon offsetting and ESG compliance will require guidance.

He concluded by emphasizing the role of legal professionals in serving the public interest and ensuring justice for all, from the wealthiest to the most vulnerable, as a means of fostering social order, equity, and peace.
