Aliko Dangote Named to TIME100 as Refinery Gains Global Influence

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s leading industrialist, has been named to TIME magazine’s 2026 list of the world’s 100 most influential people. The Nigerian entrepreur’s inclusion – his second, after 2014 – reflects the strategic rise of his 650,000-barrel-a-day petroleum refinery in Lagos, now a critical supplier amid global energy volatility.

Africa’s largest refinery has expanded exports across the continent and into Europe as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz disrupt traditional shipping routes. Recent shipments include 456,000 tons of refined products to West and Central African markets and the facility’s first petrol cargo to East Africa.

European buyers, facing tighter fuel markets, are increasingly sourcing from Nigeria.

Beyond energy, TIME cited Dangote’s broader push to industrialize Africa through investments in cement, agriculture, and infrastructure. His “Vision 2030” targets steel, power, and port development to reduce the continent’s import dependence.

At 69, with a Forbes-estimated net worth of US$28.7 billion, Dangote remains the only Nigerian on this year’s list, appearing in the “Titans” category alongside global leaders.

His inclusion underscores a shift: Africa’s industrial capacity is no longer just a local story but a factor in global energy security. Whether Dangote’s model can be replicated – and whether Nigeria can sustain the stability required – remains the larger question.
