Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Conakry, Cape Verde, and Gambia are spearheading a transformative shift in African aviation with the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). This landmark initiative aims to dismantle long-standing barriers in the aviation sector by fostering seamless connectivity, reducing travel costs, and boosting regional economic growth.

The 18th plenary session of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG), held in Abuja, marked a pivotal moment as representatives from these countries reaffirmed their commitment to aligning national aviation policies with SAATM’s revised principles. The objective: to build a more integrated, competitive, and efficient air travel network across Africa.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, highlighted SAATM’s role in improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and enhancing passenger satisfaction – all at lower costs. He emphasized its alignment with broader goals of economic integration and mobility across the continent.

Adefunke Adeyemi, Secretary-General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), echoed this urgency, calling on member states to embed SAATM provisions into national legislation. She stressed the need to strengthen regulatory bodies to ensure effective governance and compliance.

SAATM is a flagship African Union Agenda 2063 project aimed at enabling the free movement of air services across the continent. By eliminating restrictive bilateral agreements, it seeks to promote competition, lower fares, and open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.

While implementation has faced delays due to disparities in aviation infrastructure and regulatory frameworks among member countries, recent momentum – driven by political will and strategic collaboration – is promising. Efforts now focus on harmonizing regulations, building institutional capacity, and providing technical and financial support to less developed aviation sectors.

As the SAATM initiative gains traction, it holds the potential to reshape Africa’s aviation landscape, enabling a more connected and economically integrated continent.
