Gas prices dip slightly in Antigua
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Thursday June 16, 2011 – Amidst rumours that consumers would again have to pay more for gas and diesel, Finance Minister Harold Lovell announced yesterday that rather than going up, the price of gas would drop from today.
The decrease of 65 cents puts gasoline at EC$15.80 (US$5.85) a gallon. The price of diesel remains unchanged at EC$15.75 (US$5.83), until the current supply is exhausted.
“The change in the price of gasoline reflects the automatic pass through mechanism for fuel prices, and is based on the ex-refinery price of the current fuel shipment. The price of diesel is also likely to decline with the next shipment,” a statement from Lovell’s ministry said.
The price of cooking gas will continue to be subsidized and therefore remains unchanged.
Gas and gasoline were both increased to EC$13.99 (US$5.18) a gallon back in March, before another hike took effect last month.
Last week, the Finance Minister said he would make an announcement about the prices, but had not said which direction they would go. There had been speculation that it would increase by as much as three dollars.
