Ethiopian and AfDB Partner on Africa’s Largest Airport Project
The Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a Letter of Intent with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to collaborate on the Bishoftu International Airport Development Project, poised to become Africa’s largest airport.
With a US$7.8 billion investment, Ethiopian Airlines is spearheading efforts to expand the country’s airport capacity, addressing rising passenger and cargo demand. The new airport is projected to increase annual passenger capacity from 17 million to 60 million by 2040.
During the signing ceremony, Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide expressed gratitude to the AfDB for its ongoing support, including US$1.2 billion in investments. He also emphasized Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic reforms and urged the AfDB to continue supporting Ethiopia’s development, particularly in reform initiatives, regional integration, and renewable energy.
AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to the airport project, calling it an “African flagship” and applauding Ethiopia’s economic progress and Addis Ababa’s transformation under Abiy’s leadership.
Both parties agreed to strengthen their collaboration for the benefit of Ethiopia and the broader region.
