Ethiopia Launches Duty-Free Trade with 24 African Nations Under AfCFTA

Ethiopia has activated duty-free trade with 24 African countries under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), marking a strategic pivot from global reliance toward regional integration.

The Ethiopian Customs Commission confirmed that preferential tariffs are now in effect for approved exports, following months of regulatory alignment. This operational step places Ethiopia among the front-runners turning AfCFTA commitments into tangible commerce.

The timing is significant: Ethiopia’s exports hit US$2.48 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2025/26 – driven by coffee, oilseeds, textiles, and light manufactures – with growing demand across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

New trade corridors through Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan are accelerating logistics and value-chain integration. Leveraging its geographic centrality, Addis Ababa aims to boost export competitiveness and reduce import dependency.

AfCFTA grants Ethiopia duty-free access to a 1.4-billion-person market with a combined GDP of over US$3 trillion. The government is pairing this access with special economic zones and a focus on industrial and processed goods to embed the country in pan-African supply chains.

Challenges persist – infrastructure gaps, customs digitization delays, and non-tariff barriers could slow progress. Yet Ethiopia’s move signals strong confidence in Africa’s capacity to fuel its own growth.

If executed well, Ethiopia’s AfCFTA rollout could become a blueprint for regional-led development across the continent.
