Simone Biles leads US team to Olympic Gold
Simone Biles landed the first of a possible 5 Olympic gymnastic golds in Rio by helping the United States win the women’s team title on Tuesday night.
Simone Biles led the dominant Americans to an expected victory to a gold medal. She produced the best vault, beam and floor routines of the competition as the US led from start to finish, finally winning by a huge margin of more than 8 points.
She has come to these Olympic games widely hailed as the most talented gymnast ever, since becoming the first woman to capture three straight world all-around championships. During a three-year run that has seen her win the all-around at each of the 12 major international competitions she has entered, no one has even approached her level of difficulty or execution.
Biles is expected to dominate individual competition the rest of the Olympics and favored to win not just all-around gold but take first on 3 apparatus competitions. If she does that, she will become the first female gymnast to capture 5 gold medals in a single Games.
The team, also comprising Lauren Hernandez, Alexandra Raisman, 2012 Olympic gold medalist – Gabrielle Douglas and Madison Kocian, took gold with a score of 184.897, with Russia taking silver and China bronze.
