Lewis Hamilton wins the Canadian Grand Prix

It is the fourth win of the year for the Hamilton. He leads the Formula One standings in a quest for his second straight world championship. It’s also Hamilton’s fourth victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Montreal’s Isle Notre-Dame, where he earned his first Grand Prix win in 2007.

Nico Rosberg was second. The two Mercedes teammates started on the front row and were never threatened. Mercedes has won 6 of the 7 races in the Formula One series this year.

Valtteri Bottas was third, giving Williams its first appearance on the podium all season. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastien Vettel were fourth and fifth.

Hamilton led from the pole to the chequered flag with no threat from anyone except his Mercedes teammate. Hamilton’s problems in the previous race were also internal: A late strategic decision by his team cost him a chance at a fourth victory of the year. He made up for it the next chance he got.

The twin Silver Arrow Mercedes were never seriously threatened. Hamilton pitted in lap 29 to surrender the lead to Rosberg, but took it right back when the German stopped to change his tires a lap later.

There was some competition further back in the field, with Vettel moving up steadily. The 2013 Canadian GP champ started near the back of the grid after failing to get out of the first qualifying session on Saturday and then taking a five-position starting penalty for passing a car with the red flag out during practice.

The day was not as good for McLaren, with both cars failing to finish.

Jenson Button had a disastrous weekend, unable to get onto the track in qualifying and retiring 16 laps early on Sunday. Fernando Alonso was the first one out of the race, complaining that he lost power in the 46th lap.
