Ghana and Mali win their opening matches at African Cup of Nations

John Mensah scored in the 25th minute, and four-time champion Ghana beat Botswana 1-0 Tuesday night in their opener at the African Cup of Nations

Mensah also was ejected in the 66th minute for a desperate foul on Jerome Ramatlhakwane, who was heading in on goal.

Ghana is ranked 26th by FIFA and Botswana, at its first major tournament, is 94th.

In the second Group D game, Mali defeated Guinea 1-0 as Bakaye Traore scored on a deflected shot in the 30th minute.
