Senegal election update: Key presidential aide defects to opposition
Senegalese leader Abdoulaye Wade’s senior minister responsible for Presidential Affairs has quit.
Mr Adama Sall has resigned the post and joined presidential contestant Macky Sall, who pitted against President Wade in a runoff election on March 25.
“We have decided to team up for the simple reason that Macky Sall, with whom I worked during his tenure as premier between 2005 and 2007, is an excellent successor to complete the wonderful work started by President Wade,” Mr Adama Sall told reporters Monday.
He explained that his move followed a phone call from Macky Sall on Saturday during which the presidential hopeful invited him to join his campaign.
Both Adama Sall and Macky Sall hail from Matam in the north.
“The time has come for Wade to go and I’m joining Macky Sall without condition,” said Adama Sall upon his defection.
