News Release

Ottawa, November 20, 2012 – Senator Don Meredith has issued the following statement in celebration of National Child Day:

“Today individuals and organizations across this country are celebrating National Child Day. As we commemorate Canada’s adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, this occasion reminds both adults and children of the basic rights that are due to every child born into this world.

I commend our government for the actions they have taken to support our children and their families. Today Minister Diane Ablonczy marked Universal Children’s Day by presenting the Our Missing Children Award of Excellence to the Missing Children’s Network, as well as launching a new guidebook for parents left behind in international parental child abductions. Over the past year our government has supported families through the Universal Child Care Benefit, unprecedented transfers to the provinces and territories in support of early childhood development programs and child care, and more recently the Helping Families in Need Act to support children and their parents at times when they need it most.

I believe we cannot afford to rest until every child in the world has access to the basic freedoms outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

I want to reaffirm my support for the millions of children here in Canada and around the world in search of freedom, justice, and the basic necessities of life.”
