News Release

Ottawa – Last Saturday, Senator Don Meredith was awarded the Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award at the 2012 Planet Africa Awards. Organized by the Planet Africa Group, these awards are designed to recognize deserving individuals that make a profound difference in society and in the lives of people of African heritage.

Senator Meredith was very humbled and inspired by this honor.

“Nelson Mandela is a great leader who has stood up for human rights and justice for over 60 years. It was an honor to receive this award that bears his name; an award given to me by the African Canadian community. I left the gala inspired to work harder and stand on the shoulders of men like Nelson Mandela in fighting for a fair and just society,” the senator stated.

As a proud Jamaican Canadian, the senator has been keeping his eye on the flooding in his native Jamaica and encourages Canadians to assist with any humanitarian support Jamaica and the Caribbean may need as they deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Jamaica and other Caribbean countries have been hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Lives have been lost, crops have been ruined, and homes, as well as possessions, have been destroyed. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean as they deal with the aftermath of the hurricane. I ask Canadians to reach out to their neighbors in the Caribbean as they recover from this storm.”
