Golding promises smooth transition

Outgoing Prime Minister Bruce Golding (pictured), is seeking to allay fears that the pending change in the leadership of the Government could lead to chaos.

At least six members of the governing Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) have indicated that they are considering entering the race to replace Golding as party leader and prime minister.

In an address to the nation last night, Golding echoed claims by the JLP secretariat that systems are in place to ensure a smooth transition and to continue the programmes that his administration has implemented. “The financial markets remain sober while they await the appointment of a new prime minister and confirmation that we will not deviate from the economic reforms on which we have embarked. In my remaining few weeks, I will continue to work as hard as I have ever done and hand over the reins of office gracefully to my successor,” said Golding.

“The Electoral Office of Jamaica has been asked to manage the voting process and everything will be done to ensure an orderly transition,” added Golding.

The prime minister also used last night’s presentation to send a message to those looking to replace him. “The election of a new leader is a process that must be conducted in a mature, transparent and dignified manner. This is especially so since we form the Government,” he said.
