Election 2012: First results declared from some states

The polls have begun closing in the US presidential election, with the first results trickling in from some states.

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have each taken several states, exit polls suggest, with no critical swing states awarded so far.

Exit polls showed that Obama has taken Vermont, Washington DC, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Maine awards electoral votes by congressional district. Obama has won three out of four in the state, with the final not yet called.

Romney won Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia.
