African Union Chair up for grabs as Jean Ping’s 1st term draws to a close
The African Union (AU) Commission top seat is now open for competition and South Africa is preparing to unseat the current holder, Dr Jean Ping, the Africa Review can confirm.
The tenure of French-speaking Dr Ping, the Gabonese former Foreign minister and chairman of the AU Commission since 2008, ends this year.
Dr Ping has expressed his interest in securing another term.
African head of states are set to vote in secret ballot for the holder of the highest position of the continental union at the end of January 2012, at a summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
