Senegal Gets $35 Million From African Development Bank For Road Rehabilitation Project

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has earmarked $35 million for a road rehabilitation project in Senegal which will also create jobs for the country’s youth and women, The AfDB on Friday approved $35 million for the rehabilitation work on the Dinguiraye-Nioro-KeurAyib road connecting with the town of Kaolack.

Amadou Oumarou, the director of the Department for Transport at the AfDB told journalists that the objective of the project is to facilitate the movement of goods and people, increase trade with the rest of the country and improve the population’s access to basic social services.

He said, “This project is expected to contribute towards boosting sub-regional trade and open up rural areas in the country.”  According to him, the road, which is about 40 km long, constitutes an economic and strategic link between the north and south of Senegal through neighboring Gambia.  The Senegalese government said, by financing the project, the Bank will be contributing towards the implementation of the priority actions program of the country’s so-called Economic Emergence Plan (PSE).
