Montserrat Premier Reuben Meade has conceded defeat following the general elections in the country, congratulating the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDM), Donaldson Romeo for a “well fought battle”.

Romeo, speaking on national radio Friday morning, thanked the voters for practically guaranteeing that his party will form the next Government of Montserrat.

He said the trend was pointing to “a clear and convincing victory” for the PDM and appealed for a united Montserrat as the new administration undertakes the task of rebuilding the island-territory battered by a volcano.

“There is nothing in that manifesto that we cannot do. I expect us to do even more,” he told radio listeners.

Preliminary results of the polls have not yet been released but Meade, who was seeking a second consecutive term for his incumbent Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP), said “I would like to congratulate PDM in terms of a very clear election victory.

“Both parties have worked hard. I would like to thank all the persons who supported both PDM and MCAP and also the independents. It was an interesting election campaign and clearly one team had to win and PDM won and again my heartiest congratulations to the entire team,” he said on radio.

The Electoral Office said 31 candidates had been nominated to contest the polls, including a record number of 13 independents. Three of the independents including former premier, Lowell Lewis, had come together under the banner of the Association of Independent Candidates (AIC).
