Jamaica: JLP suffers crushing defeat in local gov’t polls
The ruling People’s National Party (PNP) crushed the opposition Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) in the local government elections held Monday, taking 12 of the 13 parish councils, among them the prized Kingston and St Andrew Corporation in the capital city.
The PNP also won the Portmore Municipal Council and saw its candidate George Lee unseating the JLP’s Keith Hinds in the island’s only mayoral race.
This was the second time in three months that the PNP was celebrating, having crushed the JLP 42-21 seats in the general elections held last December.
Yesterday’s poll was characterised by a low voter turnout of 34.5 percent, according to the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EoJ), a significant drop from the 53 percent voter turnout in the December election.
