Former Nigeria President Obasanjo to mediate in Senegal political crisis
Since Thursday, the opposition and backed by civil society groups as well as musicians have been fighting street battles with the police in a bid to force President Wade to rescind his decision to contest.
The opposition have vowed not to let up until President Wade backs out of the race for the presidency and pledged to pursue the struggle even if the ageing leader wins the poll.
It is against this background that Obasanjo is arriving in the country and is expected to meet with all involved.
Several international personalities including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United States and France have failed in their attempt to persuade President Wade to drop his bid for a third term.
In an official statement on local radio stations on Saturday night, one of President Wade’s campaign directors Mr Amadou Sall said the mediation will be difficult since it comes just a week to the poll.
